During my work life and time on Council, the relationships I've built with others is most important. Continuing to build upon existing partnerships and develop new ones with the Municipality will definitely be a priority. This especially means with local residents and various groups within the community, local First Nations, other municipalities, the CVRD and provincial and federal levels of government.
I have the skills to set the stage for collaborative leadership through respectful dialogue, sound governance and rational decision making. I keep an open mind and evaluate each decision based on its merits while considering different perspectives heard in the community and at the council table. I believe this is key for the role of mayor.
When I say “let’s meet for coffee” I mean it. I hear from many in our community who want to be more engaged in the local political process but don’t know where to start or don't feel included to do so. With all of the responsibilities we each have in our day-to-day lives, I understand that taking a survey or attending an extra meeting just might not be the priority. I believe everyone is welcome to join the conversation, and while we may not always agree, we must remain respectful.
As we carry on into our "post-pandemic" lives, it's important that we can get back to in-person conversations and debate. It's been a challenge to have heated discussions at the Council table online, only to end the meeting alone in your home. Being able to interact in between meetings and have that personal interaction is so vital to maintaining healthy relationships. I believe that has spanned out into the community as well and many people are angry with how the pandemic rolled out. But we need to be able to work together if we want to address all of the challenges we are facing.
