North Cowichan has the opportunity to set the conditions we want to see in our communities. With the political will, community-driven vision & support and the right amount of innovation, anything is possible.
We have a serious housing crisis in the Cowichan Region and we are not alone. I support the Housing First Model and understand there is need for housing whether you are a student looking to rent, a family wanting to purchase a home or are retired and looking to downsize. North Cowichan has so much potential to move forward with housing that is attainable for those who really need it. I understand that measures are being taken to evaluate and simplify the permit and zoning process to help make this happen and allowing for secondary suites is a great step forward. My goal is to make sure we do this not only with the community in mind, but also while preserving our ecosystems and green space. Let’s look at the immediate needs and start there while we hold a larger vision of how we want our neighbourhoods to function.
Throughout my work in the region, I have been in the community listening to the needs and wishes with our housing stock. Shared community spaces, walkability to work and services, forest preservation, water collection & conservation and energy efficiencies to keep costs low come up time and time again. The need for increasing our community connection is great.
